  I would add an idea: A futuristic looking, larger storage chest. Something like the battery. With a screen that can be set to show an item icon.

  +1 for the existing chest to stay as-is, and for a larger chest to be a different item that you unlock via research progression.
  
  Maybe even three tiers of chests: the existing small one, a larger one, and the largest one that can be powered to auto-sort itself each time you add or remove items.
  
  It’s always nice to have more than one storage option.
