Some kind of sign that can be put on a crate with a free-entry text label, readable from the front for when stacked on a shelf.

Yeah, would be nice if you could add labels to crates directly, as you can name pets or drones for example.

That already exists. Create a sign (variant without the pole) and slap on a chest (also works on chests on shelves)
